New Mexico Food recommendations

New Mexico Food recommendations

As you know last week, we went to New Mexico for a whole week vacation. We loved learning about the culture and eating our way as much as possible. There were so many places that we could not try and are worth trying. Here’s a small list of places we ate, and some were great, and some were okay. But everyone’s taste buds are different so I thought I will still share most of the places.

The Shed, Santa Fe

This was my favorite meal, either we were really hungry, or the food was too good. I got vegetarian blue corn enchiladas, tamale with green chile, chips and salsa. Everything was great. We Their red chile was spicy and delicious. Highly recommend it.

Our meal at The Shed

Crafts Donuts and Coffee, Food Truck Santa Fe – They had such a good donut. We tried orange creamsicle and boston cream. They were piping hot when we got them.

Kakawa Chocolates, Santa Fe

We tried two different hot chocolate drink.

Sage Bread, Santa Fe

A cute little bakery that served some of the nicest croissants (what we had for brekkie), they also have limited salads and toasts options for light lunch. We also bought some sourdough bread for burgers.

Tibet Kitchen, Santa Fe

We wanted something different, so we found this place. Momos were okay, it had potato filling. It tasted good, but just okay in our liking. The noodles and spring rolls were really good. Ask for more spice if you like spicy.

Coyote Kitchen, Santa Fe

The food here was okay. Nothing great. The tacos I had I liked them, love the pesto it came with. Veggies were grilled well My husband tried chicken enchiladas, he thought it lacked flavor. Cornbread that came with the meal was good.

Tia Sophia, Santa Fe

Again, historic old family-owned restaurant. Food was good. We loved their salsa a lot that we asked them to pack some for the road ahead of us. We tried Sopas with honey and cinnamon sugar. They were not hot, so they tasted okay. I wish they served them hot with the meals. We shared a special of the day as we were not hungry.

La Neuva, Las Cruces

The food was good, it’s a very old restaurant and great service. Vegetarian option was okay, still very fresh, and well made. But I prefer more vegetables etc. It was simple. However, my husband’s chicken tacos were great. He loved them.

Grounded Coffee, Las Cruces

A very nice coffee place we rested for some time before heading to dinner. They also have wine and pizzas and other food. The lattes were perfect. The vibe/ ambiance was good.

La Posta, Mesilla

This might be my favorite restaurant that we went to for the ambiance, décor and service. The food was good but nothing extraordinary. We only tried few things so can’t say much. But I would highly recommend you have this place on your list. Mesilla is a such a cute city too. We were heading out to White Sands and couldn’t have a better breakfast/lunch here. We went as soon as they opened, but by the time we got out, there was a huge line. So, go early. I am glad we had huge breakfast/brunch here. I took so many videos and pictures of this place, specially as we were the first ones to enter, it was empty and quiet.

Luna Rosa Winery, Mesilla

We just had gelato here. It was perfect. I like that they have little nook for gelato at the front, so you can just get gelato if you please and leave. BTW, they have pizza and wine too as it is a winery.

El Bruno’s, Cuba

We tried queso, Navajo tacos, their famous Margarita. I loved the Margarita, so perfectly made. I also loved their hot sopas with honey. So, prefect.

Boon’s Thai, Farmington

This was a highlight meal for us. Their Khao Soi was out of this world. I am still thinking of that taste. The pad thai was good too. Portions were some of the huge portions I have seen, so order accordingly. I wish I can get such good vegetarian Khao Soi in NJ or NY.

Curry Leaf Indian restaurant, Alburqurque

We tried couple of dishes even though we claimed not to be hungry. Mango Lassi’s were good, so as Samosa, dosa and Chili chicken. They had buffet as well that we didn’t try. It looked good.

The Paleta Bar, Alburqurque

One of the evenings, we tried Paletas. This place had so many varieties of paleta and not only that, but you can also customize them with dark, milk chocolate dip, nuts, and candy, fruits etc. It was good.

Katrina’s Churros, Alburqurque

Fresh hot churros made as per order. Try them. They were good. We asked two flavors- strawberry and chocolate filled. Strawberry was okay, chocolate ones were good.

Sister, Alburqurque

Loved the vibe of this place, it’s a hipster place with live music, play arcade, pub and limited but great food offerings. We tried truffle fries, cauliflower and chicken tacos. Everything was great.

Things we tried and everyone should experience traveling to New Mexico. There are many more things, just sharing few that comes to mind.

Biscochitos, New Mexico’s official cookies. These cookies are so simple but very delicious with anise flavor to them and sometimes with cinnamon flavor too.

Navajo Taco, Famous fry bread filled with beans, lettuce, pico de gallo, and chile on the side

Chile, Red chile and Green Chile both are very famous. Depends on personal preference. New Mexico is known for Hatch chile production. So, you find lots of places with chile as highlight of the meal. If you are confused get both, they call it Christmas chile due red and green colors. My personal favorite was the one we had at The Shed.

Posole – we did not get to try this. Either we were not very hungry and or just didn’t feel like it. But I really wanted to try it. It’s made with dried corn, chile and some other ingredients. It’s like a soup. Or stew.

Sopapillas – Fried dough with nice hollow, always eaten with honey and cinnamon sugar. Some places had honey and cinnamon sugar on all tables. Some will bring honey with their sopas. Most of times we got them complimentary with our order. I loved the ones we had at El Bruno’s in Cuba, as they were served hot.

Frito Pie – Five and Dime store in Santa Fe, is the one supposed to have started Frito pie. I am not sure how true it is. But if you are up for some Frito Pie then definitely stop by and try some.

XO, Devangi
