What If I told you that I tried Jalapeno poppers recently, you won’t believe it. And now, it’s my favorite appetizers. There’s something about a crispy breaded poppers filled with creamy cream cheese filling. And, for most part its easy to make. The breading part can get a little bit messy but so worth it.
While making this recipe, I could not resist trying one or two popper. It was so delicious, also never to make recipes hungry stomach. I have seen people make open faced poppers too, apparently, I prefer this version. The ones I am talking about only have a little bit of breading on top. This one is breaded all around so more crispy deliciousness.
Firstly, getting the coating to stay on shiny smooth jalapenos is a little bit of work. So have patience. Secondly, it can get messy so have a little game plan to work around the breading station.
These poppers are perfect for game day appetizer for a gathering or Cinco De Mayo. Also, you do not need a reason to make these.
Some people cannot tolerate spicy foods, but these are not spicy at all. Most of the heat gets eliminated while prepping and cooking process. They taste not spicy and once you pair it with my guava chutney, you will love it. So, the seeds and the veins of the peppers usually have heat. Once you remove them, its not spicy at all. It will have peppery taste but just not spicy. Although, you can bake them in either oven or air-fryer, I prefer these fried. I tried air-frying them and did not like them. So, I decided to fry them. We don’t eat fried food all the time. Occasionally its totally okay.
However, you can totally reheat them in the oven or air-fryer. That would bring back crispiness.
Alternatively, I tried air-frying them, nevertheless I didn’t like them so I am sharing deep fried version. Importantly, they can air-fried or baked. Especially, I don’t make fried food all the time, so for me. indulging in fried foods once in a while is totally okay. lol.
They are filled with tasty cream cheese and covered in panko breadcrumbs giving it a crispy texture.

Jalapeno Poppers
Ingredients
- 12 large Jalapeno peppers
- 6 oz. softened cream cheese
- 1/3 cup cheddar cheese or amul cheese grated
- 1 tsp Italian seasonings/herbs
- 1 tsp sriracha sauce
- 1/4 tsp chili flakes optional
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- Salt to taste
- 1 cup panko breadcrumbs or more
- 1/3 cup all-purpose flour dry
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour slurry
Instructions
- With the help of a small pairing knife, cut each jalapeno in half lengthwise. Scoop out the seeds and veins of the jalapeno using a spoon. Set aside.
- In a medium mixing bowl, mix together cream cheese, cheese, and rest of the ingredients of the filling – garlic powder, Italian seasonings, salt, sriracha and chili flakes. Mix it all together and set aside.
- Take three bowls and create dipping station. In one bowl, add dry flour. In another bowl, add panko breadcrumbs and add tiniest pinch of salt, ¼ tsp Italian seasonings.
- In third bowl, add all purpose flour and little of bit water to make a slurry consistency of batter. (you can use eggs to do this step too)
- Fill the jalapenos with cream cheese filling using a piping bag or just a spoon. I used a spoon. Make it smooth on top. Finish with all of them.
- Simply, toss each filled pepper in dry flour first, then wet flour slurry, then again in dry flour carefully and finally in panko breadcrumbs. It will look a little messy. I like to coat all around the peppers.
- Alternately you can just do it only on top of the cream cheese filling if you like. Set them aside.
- Preheat some oil in deep pot for frying on medium. Once the oil is hot, drop few at a time in the oil and let them fry thoroughly on each side and then remove them on absorbent paper.
- Serve it warm with some Guava sauce or any other sauce of your choice.
