Fada ni Khichdi/ Daliya

Fada ni Khichadi is made with broken wheat, yellow mung beans and vegetables. It’s a wholesome one pot comforting meal.

On cold winter days, a bowl of warm mouthwatering hot fada ni khichdi with some vegetables and spices is so comforting. Served with cold, creamy yogurt on the side and a dollop of ghee completes the meal.

Khichdi has become this new super food made famous by westerners. We have been eating Khichdi for longest time, instead of calling it superfood.

Fada is the Gujarati name for daliya broken wheat, cracked wheat. Apparently, Fada or daliya is so wholesome on its own but in Khichdi recipe we combine it with vegetables and yellow split mung dal, it makes for a delicious one pot meal. Khichdi is like a savory porridge.

The texture of khichdi could be slightly set or runny. The way you prepare it makes it creamy in texture. It’s such a wholesome meal. I usually make khichdi in pressure cooker, but you can prepare it in instant pot or pot.

The very well-known khichdi is made with lentils and rice. Besides,t here are various variations of Khichdi we can make. Sometimes, I want plain simple Khichdi and sometimes I like to make Vaghareli Khichdi. I also love Fada ni Khichdi.

Fada is also called Daliya. Fada ni Khichdi is more nutritious compared to rice khichdi. Moreover, it is fiber packed, fulfilling and nourishing.

Daliya is broken wheat, prepared from whole wheat grains. So, it is a grain and thus it’s not gluten free. We also make a sweet from fada. Check it out if you haven’t yet. It’s like steel cut- oats.
